This was the first oil painting I ever did. I had painted a lot with gouache, acrylic and watercolours, but I specifically wanted to try oil paints.
I painted it specifically to enter into an art competition called Painting on the Edge in 2003. Sadly this year does not show on their archives. I was absolutely shocked when I got the letter in the mail that said my painting had been chosen to be one of the 50 paintings to show in the show and that it had been selected from over 400 entrants.
I look at it now and I see all the flaws in how the canvas and the painting was prepared, and for this reason I wouldn’t part with this piece, but every time I see it on my wall I give a small smile at knowing that this once was hung on a Art Gallery wall on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC.
